GROUNDED: a photographic meditation on grief + loss

Local artist Sarah Johnson explores issues of grief and loss in a series of photographs captured while exploring the region on a bicycle. Seeking a grounding after experiencing the loss of her mother, she has used the photographing of found nature as a meditative and grieving process.

“I knew I wanted to reflect on these experiences through the meditative practice of art, both to more fully process my own experience as well as to share it with others.”

Ms. Johnson has a BA Art and Women’s Studies from University of Iowa, and a MS in Community Counseling, Winona State University. She works with Gundersen Health, as well as an adjunct teacher at Winona State University. She regularly can be heard singing with The Old Fashioneds and Manfort, as well as guest vocalist with Limestone Cowboy. Mindfulness is a part of her professional and personal life, as is a daily practice of art making, biking, hiking, mindful eating, meditation, yoga, and laughing.
